Audi S1 coming to Geneva, this year!

Audi S1

And on the eighth day God created the Audi S1. That’s not to say this hitherto mythical S1 hot hatch will be the best example of its genre, not at all. It’s just that the gestation of this little fighter has been going since the big guy in the sky started getting creative. But now, we are told by Auto Express, the Audi S1 will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Supposedly it will have around 170kW (230hp) being produced by a 2.0 litre turbo (that’s a Golf GTI engine to you and me) and will boast quattro all-wheel drive as standard. There’s no surprise to learn that a 6-speed S tronic transmission will be available, but we’re still hoping a trad manual box will be on the cards too.

Given the long haul creation of the S1 anything could change between now and March, so let’s cross our fingers and hope for the best. All while not trying to think how much this hot hatch will cost if and when it lands on our shores.

Chris Harris compares Audi R8 GT3 and R8 V10

Chris Harris with the Audi R8 LMS Ultra GT3

Chris Harris is a lucky man. This we know. But he’s further proved this point by being given the keys and the pit crew to an Audi R8 V10 road car and an R8 LMS Ultra GT3 racecar and an empty Nürburgring grand prix track.

The aim of this exercise was to see how closely related the street car and track car are, if at all. You may be surprised by Harris’ discovery.

The history of Quattro

Audi RS2 Avant

Chris Harris from Drive spends a few minutes looking back at the history of Audi’s quattro brand, which started out in the world of rallying before coming to life on public roads with models such as the legendary Ur Quattro and the devastatingly quick RS2 Avant.

Audi Mercedes-Benz Volkswagen

Volkswagen to ignite hot hatch power war

Volkswagen Mk7 Golf R

Mercedes-Benz makes much of the fact its A45 AMG features the most powerful four-cylinder production engine in the world. But that’s all about to change with word Volkswagen is set to trump the output of the hand-built AMG motor.

The 2.0 litre turbo in the A45 AMG produces 265kW/450Nm and the lab coats from Wolfsburg reckon they can better that with their warmed over 2.0 litre four-pot aiming for a minimum of 283kW (380hp). Volkswagen R engineers also reckon they can push towards 500Nm of torque.

An unnamed VW source claims: “It’s going to be a very fast car. Because it will be able to use all of its torque in first gear, it’s going to get to 100km/h in the very low four-second bracket.”

The A45 AMG limits torque in the first three gears to help protect its dual-clutch transmission. The new Volkswagen engine, able to be fitted to any of the group’s MQB-based cars, will be mated to an all-wheel drive system and specially developed 6-speed DSG which can cope with the predicted torque in all gears.

The engine is “based on an old generation engine block, so it’s cheaper to make than the AMG motor, too, and a lot less complex,” the source added. “It will move the game on again.”

Sounds like fun and games, and that’s just around the Audi and Volkswagen boardrooms as the two stablemates fight over who gets first dibs. Audi thinks its new TT would be a good fit, while Volkswagen has its sights set on the new Scirocco featuring the engine, which should be developed and ready to rumble late next year.

A preview of the engine may come in a concept car later this year, at September’s Paris Motor Show perhaps.

Naturally, Mercedes won’t take any challenge to its power crown lying down, with speculation an A45 AMG Black Series could boast a mighty 300kW.

This is going to be fun!

Audi allroad shooting brake concept revealed

Audi allroad shooting brake concept

Last month Audi previewed what we now know is the allroad shooting brake concept, which is what you see here. Then, and now, it’s clear this show car is a real-world preview of the next-gen TT coupé.

Certainly, if you look inside the cabin, the dash of this shooting brake concept matches the new TT interior revealed in Las Vegas last week.

On the outside the production TT may not match this concept panel for panel, but you can expect the front grille, headlight treatment and general shape of the TT to be directly descended from the shooting brake concept.

Indeed, Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, Audi’s Technical Development boss, has said as much: “We are offering very concrete glimpses of the near future in this show car.”

The design language previewed here will likely carry across other future models as well. The next A4, for example.

For what it’s worth the allroad shooting brake is powered by a 300kW/650Nm petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain. The bulk of that power comes from a 2.0 TFSI petrol engine producing 215kW/380Nm. While two electric motors provide the rest: 40kW at the front axle and a separate motor for the rear axle offering 85kW. They say both motors can operate together with the petrol engine, so that makes 340kW to us. Never mind.

Despite the use of aluminium and CFRP for the body panels the concept still tips the scales at a not so moderate 1600kg, but with all hands on deck in the drivetrain department and a ubiquitous double-clutch gearbox the allroad shooting brake can reach 100km/h in 4.6 seconds.

Oh, and, don’t you just love the way car makers post-rationalise their concept models. Audi’s explanation for this concept model is a bit like a tampon commercial:

The versatility and functionality of the Audi allroad shooting brake is ideal for young, sporty and active people. In the winter in California, for example, they could drive the car from Los Angeles to the San Gabriel Mountains for snowboarding in the morning, and then head out to at Venice Beach for some kite surfing in the afternoon.

A look inside the new Audi TT

2014 Audi TT interior

Audi has used the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to preview the interior of the new TT. After getting a taste of the 8V A3 the finish of the forthcoming TT is as you’d expect. That said this interior does take quite a leap forward.

You will notice a large TFT monitor behind the steering wheel. This has been labelled the Audi virtual cockpit and by combining the instrument cluster with the digital display Audi has done away with a traditional central screen above the transmission tunnel. That move has also brought about the move of the climate control vents featuring a small display to show the temperatue settings. Quite neat, really.

Want to see the Audi A3 Sedan for yourself?

Audi A3 sedan

The Audi A3 Sedan will launch nationally at the end of the month. But if you’re keen to see one a bit sooner than that you’re in luck, because it will be on display at the Sydney Festival (9–26 January).

On show in the Fetsival Village in Sydney’s Hyde Park, the A3 Sedan display will feature artwork by UK airbrush artist DC Willans and promises to be all very hip and sophisticated. There’s prizes to be won as well, which you can read about in the press release after the break.

Also, while we were off enjoying Christmas Audi Australia released its manufacturer’s list pricing for the A3 Sedan:

Attraction specification level
A3 sedan 1.4 TFSI COD S tronic (103kW/250Nm) – $39,800

Ambition specification level
A3 sedan 1.8 TFSI S tronic (132kW/250Nm) – $44,800
A3 sedan 2.0 TDI S tronic (110kW/320Nm) – $44,800
A3 sedan 1.8 TFSI quattro S tronic (132kW/250Nm) – $47,800

If you’d prefer the faster S3 sedan then you won’t have long to wait. It should be in the country hot on the heels of the A3 sedan, with prices expected to be $1500–2000 more than the S3 Sportback.

Audi Sport quattro laserlight concept revealed

Audi Sport quattro laserlight concept

Audi is showing off the third iteration of its Sport quattro concept, following previous examples from 2010 and 2013. This example will debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week and is heavily based on the 2013 concept.

That means its V8 petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain produces 515kW/800Nm and can propel the 1850kg concept to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds. What makes this concept different and relevant to the CES audience is the “laserlight” headlights.

According to Audi the laser diodes are much smaller than the soon-to-be passé LED diodes. Despite being only a few microns in diameter Audi confidently states they can light the road 500m ahead with double the range and three times the luminosity of LED high beams. We’ll get a chance to see the technology in action later this year when the 2014 R18 e-tron quattro hits the racetrack.

The front grille also offers a preview of what to expect future sporty models from Ingolstadt will look like; including the next TT perhaps?

There’s new bells and whistles inside as well. First there’s the main TFT dash display, which allows the driver to choose from a selection of modes, including a traditional speedo, navigation display and media lists. Audi insists the large display responds quickly thanks to its Tegra 30 processor from Nvidia.

“The new show car demonstrates technical ‘Vorsprung’ on many levels,” says Prof Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, Audi’s head of Technical Development. “On-board this car we have e-tron technology with 515 kW of power and 2.5l/100 km fuel economy; laser headlights that leave all previous systems in the dark with its higher performance as well as new display and operating systems with cutting-edge electronic performance. We are showing the future of Audi here.”

That’s great Ulrich, but can you please just make sure you guys build the thing instead of constantly teasing us with these stunning concepts!

Remember, Allan McNish is one lucky guy!

Allan McNish crash

Racing cars for a living means you’re automatically a lucky guy. But as we know, motorsport is dangerous and that fact was highlighted in spectacular fashion when Allan McNish crashed out of the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans in dramatic style.

We’re glad McNish was able to walk away from that wreckage totally unharmed. We’re also glad he managed to win Le Mans before he retired to finally erase any feelings of regret which may have been lingering since 2011.

You can relive the video of McNish’s accident after the break.

Allan McNish retires from competitive motorsport

Allan McNish

Reigning Le Mans winner Allan McNish has announced he will be retiring from motorsport. The Audi factory driver, who also shared the 2013 World Endurance Championship, with teammates Loïc Duval and Tom Kristensen, turns 44 on 29 December and said the time is right.

“I found the ideal moment for myself to bring an end to my LMP sports-prototype racing with Audi,” explained McNish. “Together with my teammates Tom Kristensen and Loïc Duval I finished my most successful season in the sports car.

“Having also won the Le Mans 24 Hours, I can’t wish for more than what we’ve achieved this year. I can look back on a fantastic career that has left no aims unfinished and I’m looking forward to new challenges the future holds for me.”

McNish won Le Mans three times: 1998 (Porsche GT1-98), 2010 (Audi R10 TDI) and 2013 (Audi R18 e-tron quattro).

The likeable Scot, who raced in F1 with Toyota in 2002, goes with the blessing of Audi Motorsport and the best wishes of all motor racing fans.

“We appreciate and respect Allan’s decision to retire at the pinnacle of his career,” said Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, Head of Audi Motorsport. “At the same time, this is a parting that is particularly difficult for us. All of us are well aware of Allan’s racing successes.

“We regret that Allan will no longer be contesting any races for us but are happy that he will continue to be associated with Audi Sport and the Audi brand.”

2014 Audi S3 Sportback – Australian pricing & specs

2013 Audi S3 Sportback

We’ve known for several months that Audi Australia will be pricing the new S3 Sportback from $59,900. That’s a huge price drop compared with the outgoing 8P model which was over $70K list in its final form, with much less equipment than the new model too. And now the all-new S3 Sportback is here, in showrooms across the country and ready for delivery.

After initially thinking the 206kW/380Nm S3 would struggle against more powerful and faster competition from BMW and Mercedes-Benz we’ve discovered through anecdotal evidence that plenty of buyers are seeing value in the new S3.

We lament that Australia won’t be getting the S3 in three-door form and that a 6-speed manual is a “no-cost” option. And losing 15kW due to Australia’s designation as a “hot climate” country seems a bit annoying when BMW and Mercedes don’t cobble their performance products. But we can’t really argue with the S3’s performance and standard equipment wrapped up in a sub-$60K list price.

Full details from Audi can be found after the break, including Australian press info.

2014 Audi R18 e-tron quattro revealed

2014 Audi R18 e-tron quattro

Following its track test at Sebring earlier this week Audi has given us more information on its 2014 WEC LMP1 challenger, the 2014 R18 e-tron quattro.

Powered by a V6 TDI and dual hybrid systems Audi is keen to push its record of transferring race technology to the road. Technology we take for granted now, such as TFSI petrol engines, advanced diesel engines and LED headlights, are just some of the technologies Audi has taken from its LMP1 program to its production lines.

New regulations for the 2014 season have seen Audi further develop its R18 concept and motorsport boss, Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, tells us the result is a shift in thinking: “The principles of the LMP1 regulations have fundamentally changed. The idea behind this is to achieve similarly fast lap times as in the past with considerably less energy. Making more out of less: a forward-thinking approach.”

More photos and a host of press material awaits after the break giving us a good run down of what to expect in the 2014 WEC season.
