BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition revealed

BMW M4 DTM Champions Edition

BMW has decided to celebrate Marco Wittman‘s DTM championship win with a limited edition M4 model. Called the M4 DTM Champion Edition only 23 will be made, in honour of Wittman’s race number this year.

All the cars will be delivered in Alpine White with decals and trim inspired by his Team RMG livery. There’s no comment on pricing in BMW’s brief press release, but, of course, you can expect it to cost plenty more than your standard M4. Also, with such low numbers, we can’t see this model being sold outside of Germany.

Does your PlayStation setup look like this?

SimXperience WTCC simulator

How real can a driving simulator get? This video showing the SimXperience Motion Simulator looks pretty convincing. Look at the way the seat moves around to match the inputs of the driver gamer at the wheel.

The effect of super imposing the footage of the simulator into the game itself also brings a new level of reality. We’re not saying this is perfect, but we’d like to try it out!

In case you were wondering the car is a BMW 320TC racing in a WTCC race at Suzuka, from Sector 3 Studios’ RaceRoom Racing Experience.

The BMW M2 and its 275kW power claims

F87 BMW M2 prototype

German publication Autobild predicts the new BMW M2 will boast 374PS (275kW). Further, the article also states maximum torque will be 520Nm.

This is inline with previous reports we’ve posted:

There’s been no change to the predicted power source, which means you can pencil in around 370–380PS (272–280kW) being offered from an N55B30T0 3.0 litre inline six cylinder turbo.

Autobild goes on to suggest the M2 will crack 100km/h in 4.3 seconds and will be priced from €56,500 for a base model with manual transmission, some €8500 more than an M235i.

BMW M2 development continues

BMW M2 prototype

A new BMW M2 prototype has been spotted testing at the Nürburgring in recent days. It appears as though this new F87 test mule is wearing a bodykit much closer to the final production spec.

At this stage, we can’t really tell you much else about the car’s details or performance expectations to add from the update we brought you in June:

There’s been no change to the predicted power source, which means you can pencil in around 370–380PS (272–280kW) being offered from an N55B30T0 3.0 litre inline six cylinder turbo.

We’ll continue to monitor the M2’s progress, eagerly awaiting its market launch sometime in 2015.

Front-wheel drive BMW 1 Series sedan spied

F52 BMW 1 Series sedan prototype

Despite previously suggesting it would leave Audi and Mercedes-Benz to play alone in the sand pit with the A3 sedan and the CLA, BMW now appears to making a 1 Series sedan after all.

It’s being reported the F52 1 Series sedan will be built on the front-wheel drive platform which will form the basis of the next-gen 1 and 2 Series ranges. It will also be offered with BMW’s x-Drive all-wheel drive technology.

Engine options will not go beyond four cylinders, although looking at BMW’s current 2.0 litre four pots, that still leaves room for plenty of punch.

BMW M4: Initiation ceremony

BMW M4

Until this year we didn’t know the BMW M4. To help us get to know its new icon a little better BMW has released this introductory video.

It’s a pretty cool clip and BMW is to be applauded for embracing its history and its loyal owners. Those of you playing at home may also remember the preview of this video we brought you a few weeks ago.

That M Performance exhaust sure does sound good!

VIDEO: BMW X4 v Porsche Macan

BMW X4 xDrive30d M Sport v Porsche Macan S Diesel

If you can stomach the planet’s insatiable desire for SUVs then you’ll be primed for this review from Autocar. It’s the BMW X4 up against the Porsche Macan. Two SUVs likely to polarise opinions on numerous levels, but two SUVs that are likely to be among the best in their class.

Specifically, Autocar has compared a BMW X4 xDrive30d M Sport against a Porsche Macan S Diesel. And at 1895kg and 1880kg respectively these little “small” SUVs have a lot of weight to throw around from their elevated positions.

So, they’ll be crap handlers right?

BMW’s muscular M2 spied on the prowl

BMW M2 prototype

We’re always happy to follow the gestation of a new M product and here’s one of the latest snaps of a BMW M2 prototype in testing.

Obviously all that crazy camouflage makes it hard to see, but if you plant your eyes just behind the front wheel arch you’ll see how much the front guard will be flared. It’s going to give the car a muscular appearance that should leave it as the best looking model in the 2 Series range.

We always liked the look of the E82 135i but once the beefier 1M hit the streets the donor car never quite looked as good. We expect the same to happen with the F87 M2, which will make the otherwise pleasing M235i seem a tad weedy.

There’s not much else we can tell you about the M2 that we haven’t already mentioned, other than that little sensor just above the driver’s door is used when BMW is testing different tyre configurations.

BMW M4: M Performance exhaust preview

BMW M4 with M Performance Exhaust

As good as BMW is at extracting performance from the engines it makes it is better at extracting money from its customers. So when you make yourself a new hero car, aka the F82 M4, it doesn’t make economic sense to put the best exhaust you have in your parts bin on the car at the factory.

No, it’s much better to ship the car with a crumby exhaust and then offer up a better one through your dealership network where customers have the privilege of paying you another several thousand dollars for the equipment that should have been on the car right from the start.

All that brings us to this amateur video footage of an M4 being driven by Chris Forsberg during a television commercial in the States. It was reportedly part of a new marketing campaign called M Initiation, which we will no doubt hear more about in good time.

Right now, though, you can hear the M4 with what is alleged to be BMW’s own aftermarket M Performance Exhaust system. Full technical details are yet to be confirmed and there’s talk the exhaust on this car may not match the final production parts. Speculation suggests the system will be made from titanium and be a full turbo-back with catalytic converters in the downpipes. Pricing is expected to be around the US$5000 region.

Whatever, it does sound pretty good.

VIDEO: BMW M4 v Porsche 911 Carrera

BMW M4 v Porsche 911 Carrera

Evo magazine has taken to the picturesque Anglesey Circuit with a brand new BMW M4 and pitched it against a Porsche 911 Carrera. The M4 (née M3) v 911 debate is one that’s been around for years now. Two cars that compete against each other in the minds of revheads even though they don’t really share the same market segment.

So which will come out trumps on the tight seaside track? Professional racer Marino Franchitti was on hand to find out. It’s worth paying attention to his steering wheel inputs when the in-car footage is compared too.

Oh, can you believe the 991 is now three years old!

Epic drifting master class in the BMW M235i

Chris Harris drifting a BMW M235i

Ever wanted to know how to drift a rear-wheel drive car? Take one Chris Harris, one BMW 235i, one heavy right foot and a video camera then watch and learn.

Once you’ve got all that under control you can then form an Epic Driftmob with your mates, close the streets of Cape Town in South Africa, and go totally nuts! Like, really, absolutely insane.

See for yourself after the break.
