Another naughty look at the BMW M235i

BMW M235i

Today is the official launch date of information for the new BMW 2 Series. Already, we’re up to our third round of leaked images after shots of the M235i emerged from a BMW dealer presentation and the 220d was shown to the world ahead of schedule by AutoBild.

And let’s not forget, technical specs revealing the F22 M235i will have 5kW more than the M135i hatch were leaked a couple of weeks ago. Details for the 220i and 220d were also shown at the time.

Now, we’re looking at what’s certain to be just a handful of the photos of the M235i which BMW will release later today. So there’s not really a lot left for the BMW marketing department to do. But when they do reveal all we’ll bring you plenty of 2000px goodness and all the press guff we can get our hands on.

Oh yeah, the car itself, we reckon this new M235i coupé looks pretty good. We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section below.

Fernando Alonso, F1 points record holder

Fernando Alonso helmet design for 2013 Indian Grand Prix

The 12 points Fernando Alonso collected with his fourth place finish at the Japanese Grand Prix a couple of weeks back etched his name into Formula 1’s history books. It took his career points tally to 1571, five more than Michael Schumacher, and he now stands alone as the man with the most career points in F1.

Yes, we know such records are skewed horribly since the switch to the current scoring system in 2010 where a win nets a driver 25 points instead of the nine or 10 under previous systems.

Still, if you had more points than anyone else in the history of F1 you’d probably want to tell the world all about it too. Which is exactly what Fernando will be doing with this special helmet design, to be worn during this weekend’s Indian Grand Prix.

Review of F1 documentary ‘1’

1 the film, coming soon

The frustratingly titled ‘1’, a new Formula 1 documentary, has been available on iTunes since the start of the month. Alas, it won’t be available from the Australian iTunes store until some time in November. To whet your appetite of what promises to be compulsory viewing here’s a snippet from a review published by Michael Fassbender online:

The interviews and new footage is what makes “1” the most gripping and emotional documentary of its ilk, talks with James Hunt’s son Freddie, shows the friendship between Hunt and Lauda, rather than the rivalry that they shared, with Freddie repeating part of the conversation he had with Lauda when they met, “I wished I could have shared the championship with your father, he was a great man, he was my friend.”

“1” is a must see film, and not just for fans of Formula One. This films brings the humanity into the sport, focusing on the people and events in the biggest championships each year through the decades. Footage of crashes, collisions, qualifying laps, race starts and celebrations, all shown from different angles that have been obtained specifically for this documentary, including clips filmed as part of the Racer’s wives and girlfriends club “The Dog House Club”, make this film a chilling and heart-breaking viewing experience.

Here’s another BMW 2 Series leak

BMW 220d

German title Autobild has likely got itself in BMW’s bad books by revealing this 220d ahead of tomorrow’s official launch. It follows leaked pics of the M235i revealed after a dealer presentation earlier this week.

There was a video showcasing the 220d, which these still have been taken from, but it has since been removed. But the internet doesn’t forget what the eyes have seen and thanks to 2addicts we can show you what you may have missed.

In this crappy light gold paint the F22 2 Series doesn’t look its best. Which is a good thing, because overall BMW’s small coupé still looks quite good; although clearly better with the M Sport kit seen on the M235i. It helps restore faith in their design team, following the series of unfortunate events which delivered the F20 1 Series hatch.

Chris Harris on the Ferrari F12 berlinetta

Ferrari F12 berlinetta

“There’s nothing the world needs less, and there’s nothing I want more. Because it’s the best car of its type I’ve ever driven!”

Yes, it’s safe to say Chris Harris—who is now clearly back in Ferrari’s good books—loves the F12 berlinetta.

Oh, a big pat on the back for regular cameraman Neil Carey, too, this is some of his best work for Drive. Well done all, it’s a great video.

Caterham Seven 160 revealed

Caterham Seven 160

Caterham has given us limited details about its new entry-level model called the Seven 160. We already know it’s powered by a 660cc three-cylinder turbocharged engine made by Suzuki and mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Now we know that engine produces a ball-tearing 80hp (60kW).

Hmm, it’s not really a lot of power to play with is it. But, we suspect, like the Porsche Boxster, the Seven 160 will be more about its pure driving experience than outright pace. It can reach 100km/h in 6.5 seconds, so it’s no slouch, although it’s hardly going to pin you back in your seat.

But just look at the car, it has an understated purposeful look, from the subdued paint colour down to the low-rent steel wheels wrapped in skinny tyres. You just know there’s fun to be had in this thing.

Hitting the market in the UK at £17,995 ($AU30,000) fully assembled, we’re not sure if the Seven 160 will be sold in Australia. We do know we’d love a drive! And in the fantasy la-la-land where that pricing actually was reality and Seven 160 v Toyota 86 comparison is the sort of odd match-up we’d like to experience.

Ferrari invites tail to wag the dog

Ferrari fans with Stefano Domenicali

The dude in the middle is Stefano Domenicali, the Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal. You probably knew that. But it’s unlikely you’ll recognise the other two. The guy on the left is Riccardo Verdelli and the bloke on the right is Gian Maria Lamberti.

They’re a couple of regular Ferrari fans who’ve been sticking it to the Scuderia lately via social media. So, Ferrari took the unusual step of inviting them in for a chat, which is where Domenicali stepped in, to play host for the day.

And actually they’ve helped to bring us some welcome insights. You can read Ferrari’s official account by following the source link below, but here’s some edited highlights:

I don’t like it when after a Grand Prix, there are incorrect jibes aimed at Red Bull that then fall apart. And then there’s Alonso complaining about his car after every race. I’d like to see him get his ears pulled about that, but instead you almost seem to share his sentiment.
Domenicali: You are in front of the most sportsmanlike person in the world. In all the races, whether you see it or not, I congratulate our rivals. If I have something to say to him [Alonso], as would be the case with my engineers, I would do it behind closed doors and in a harsh manner. But externally, I will always defend the team. When he crossed the line, president Montezemolo intervened and in private, so did I.

After four years without winning the championship are you still sure about your choice of taking on Alonso?
Domenicali: If in the past four years we have come close to the title twice, it is partly down to him. Unfortunately, we have not been capable of giving him a car that matches his talent.

Was there really the intention to take on Kubica and will he be back in F1?
Domenicali: Yes, we were keeping an eye on him. Unfortunately, I don’t think he will be back, because with his physical problem, he would struggle in certain limited situations which require reactivity. It’s a shame.

Interesting comments on Robert Kubica at the end there, perhaps the WRC is Robert’s best bet for top level motorsport?

As you can the fans didn’t hold back with their line of questioning and kudos to Domenicali for fronting up and providing some level of accountability. Although, we’d love to know the questions and answers that haven;t made it into the public arena!

Rumour: McLaren P1 laps Nürburgring in 6:47

McLaren P1

As you know the McLaren P1 has been sighted at the Nürburgring recently. And earlier this week performance figures for the hybrid hypercar were confirmed, with one notable omission: it’s Nordschleife lap time.

A new spy video (see below) alleges the P1 has lapped the Nürburgring in 6 minutes 47 seconds. We’re not taking that as gospel until McLaren themselves make an official statement, but we do concede such a time from the 908hp petrol-electric weapon is feasible.

A 6:47 lap time would undercut the road-ready Porsche 918 by 10 seconds and matches the track-only Pagani Zonda R.

Watching the tail end of this video also gives some idea as to what an annoyance amateur spy photographers must be at times for manufacturers going about their daily work.

Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake on the way

Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake

Word is Mercedes-Benz will release a CLA Shooting Brake in 2015. This makes us very happy. As you can see from these very good renderings the CLA is perfect for conversion from sedan to estate form. And if you chucked the CLA 45 AMG drivetrain into this sexy wagon we’d be over the moon.

2014 Audi TT spied wearing heavy camo

2014 Audi TT prototype

You’re looking at the third generation Audi TT, expected to be released some time next year. The camouflage might be heavy but the general shape is unmistakable. It’s the first time the new TT has been seen in its new sheetmetal, which probably explains the lengths Audi has taken to ensure we’re not seeing too much too soon.

When the new TT does arrive you can expect its equipment and engine line up will continue to draw on the A3. Of course, both cars will share the seemingly ubiquitous MQB platform.

It’s also interesting to note Audi made sure the TT prototype wasn’t lonely during its test, bringing competitors from Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Peugeot along for the ride.

BMW M235i coming your way today

BMW M235i

A series of leaked images showing a production-spec BMW M235i have been leaked via the 2addicts forum. The car’s full reveal is scheduled to take place this Friday.

Based on the generally awesome, albeit unfortunate looking, M135i the F22 coupé version, we’re sure you’ll agree, looks a whole lot better. We can’t wait to see the official images later this week.
